As more and more testing is done regarding the benefits of Acupuncture versus drug therapy, the age-old alternative treatment continues to post favorable results. The most recent test shows that Acupuncture is very effective in providing long-lasting relief for the side effects suffered by breast cancer patients.

According to the most recent first-of-its kind study, Acupuncture was incorporated into a treatment plan and its effectiveness compared against anti-depressant drugs, which are now commonly used in therapy. The aim was to see how these two treatment programs compared in bringing relief from the side effects of breast cancer surgery including hot flashes, night sweats and excessive sweating. The results were presented in September at the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology in Boston, Mass.

The anti-depressant Effexor® (venlafaxine) produced by the drug company Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Inc., has become part of the normal drug therapy treatment plan for women suffering from hot flashes. Usually, hot flashes are treated with hormone therapy, however, breast cancer victims can’t receive hormone therapy as it increases the chance the disease will return.

There are many good reasons, including weight gain, nausea, constipation and fatigue, not to use the powerful anti-depressant drugs. Many women prefer not to use the drug because of additional problems it is known to present such as insomnia, decreased libido and dizziness. And, some women simply don’t want to take drugs.

The study conducted at Henry Ford Hospital’s Department of Radiation Oncology in Detroit, much, involved 47 breast cancer patients. Following their surgery, each was experiencing at least 14 hot flashes per week. What was discovered was that Acupuncture was equally effective in reducing the hot flashes as the anti-depressant drug, but it also provided additional health benefits.

The researchers noted that the women who received Acupuncture had an increased sense of well-being about them. They also had more energy and, in some cases, a higher sex drive than those who underwent drug treatment for their symptoms.

“Our study shows that physicians and patients have an additional therapy for something that affects the majority of breast cancer survivors and actually has benefits, as opposed to more side effects,” said Eleanor Walker, M.D. who was the lead author of the study. “The effect is more durable than a drug commonly used to treat these vasomotor* symptoms and, ultimately, is more cost-effective for insurance companies.”

Every once and awhile it seems that a new effort by someone or some group to discredit the effectiveness of Chiropractic springs up somewhere. While the source of such negative campaigns is not usually readily known, they likely emanate from those who feel threatened by the growing success and popularity of Chiropractic.

When some billboard display or a media attack against Chiropractic occurs, a simple question to ask in determining who is behind it might be, “Who has the most to lose when people begin to seek out Chiropractors in droves?

The answer to that question comes from Terry A. Rondberg, DC, who is president of the World Chiropractic Alliance (WCA). “In recent years, Chiropractic has made tremendous inroads into the American healthcare system. The increased popularity of a wellness approach that doesn’t rely on drugs and surgery is very threatening to some elements of our society. They have a huge financial interest in eliminating Chiropractic.”

In 1990, the American Medical Association (AMA) was found guilty in federal court of conspiring with other medical organizations in a “lengthy, systematic, successful and unlawful boycott” designed to eliminate Chiropractic as a competitor, according to the WCA. Many healthcare officials say that, although barred from many of the illegal practices formerly used, the drug and medical industry still engage in anti-Chiropractic campaigns. The general consensus is that many of the operations are being conducted using anonymous “front” organizations, such as the stroke victims group, for instance.

One such advertisement, likely paid by such a “front group” in Connecticut, asks, “Have you been injured by a Chiropractor?” The ad directs readers to a website of an organization calling itself the “Chiropractic Stroke Victims Awareness Group.”

Contrary to this message, medical research has shown Chiropractic to be extremely safe, particularly when compared to medical treatment. The incidence of stroke following Chiropractic adjustments has been estimated at fewer than 1 to 3 incidents per million adjustments. One 28-year study that reviewed some 110 million cases, showed conclusively that the risk of stroke from a Chiropractic adjustment is so small as to be statistically insignificant, says the WCA.

The safety of Chiropractic is made even more obvious when compared to the 100,000 deaths each year attributed to medical treatment and drug errors, according to a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Drinking coffee, taking commercially available tablets alleged to stop the dozing, or indulging in high-sugar snacks are just a few of them. Now, according to a University of Michigan study, Acupressure may bring new hope to those struggling to stay awake in the classroom.

The study involved teaching students to self-administer Acupressure to a variety of body points on their legs, feet, hands and heads. Some of these points were known to cause more stimulation, others greater relaxation. A total of 39 students in a 3-day On Job/On Campus program took part in the study. The results were published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

“Our findings suggested that Acupressure can change alertness in people who are in classroom settings for a full day which could be very good news for students who have trouble staying alert at school.” This comment comes from the director of the study, Dr. Richard E. Harris, Ph.D., in the Dept. of Internal Medicine and a researcher with the U-M Health System’s Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center.

The 39 students were taught to self-apply Acupressure regimens on either 5 stimulation points or 5 relaxation points. Techniques consisted of light tapping with the fingers and massaging with thumbs or forefingers. On day one, the first group self-administered Acupressure to the stimulation points followed by the relaxation points on days 2 and 3. The second group used relaxation points the first day and stimulation points on days 2 and 3. The Acupressure was administered mid-day during the student lunch period. Students rated their level of sleepiness in the morning, afternoon and after class using the Stanford Sleepiness Scale (SSS) for evaluation. (The SSS is a self-measurement tool for assessing sleepiness on an 8-point rating from wide awake to fast asleep.)

In each case, the stimulation group had significantly less fatigue than the other group and this has interesting implications for future studies, said Dr. Harris, who himself is a trained acupuncturist. “The study showed that a stimulation Acupressure regimen leads to a statistically significant reduction in sleepiness compared to an Acupressure treatment that focuses on relaxation,” he said.

“The idea that Acupressure can have effects on human alertness needs more study, including research that can examine the scope of influence Acupressure can have on alertness and fatigue,” said Dr. Harris. That research can have an impact on performance in the classroom and in other areas of life where a high state of alertness is mandatory or desirable.

A recent study shows that Acupuncture can play an important role in helping such a patient along the road to physical repair, rehabilitation and a useful life.

The study involving 23 patients was recently conducted to determine if electroacupuncture could be of benefit to first-time ischemic stroke victims. (Ischemic stroke means that a local area was cut off from the normal flow of blood causing the regular flow of necessary oxygen to the area to be interrupted.)

Electro-acupuncture involves the use of 2 needles attached to a device that produces a regular and continuous electric impulse. The needles are inserted at known Acupuncture points. The impulse travels through one of the needles, on throughout the body and exits via the second needle.

Following their stroke, each victim was given a course of conventional rehabilitation. A study group and a control group was then determined with members of the study provided with 8 courses of electro-acupuncture treatments.

Acupuncture was delivered over a period of one month’s time. After 2 weeks, the motor performance of both groups was tested using two recognized scientific measuring standards. This was done again following 4 weeks of treatment and repeated at 3 months and 6 months later.

The group that received electro-acupuncture showed more significant improvement results following 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 3 months after the treatment according to one of the measurement tools. The second measurement standard used showed that while there was no significant difference between each group in overall performance, there was significant improvement in upper limb function for the study group.

From these results, victims of such a stroke would certainly be advised to include a course of Acupuncture into their recovery program. Acupuncture is known to restore energy flows to blocked areas of the body. Energy flow restriction caused by a stroke could likely show improvement as in the case of this study.

Researchers concluded that electro-acupuncture can be valuable in improving the movement and motor function of the body, especially in the upper limb area, for individuals who have experienced a stroke.

Chiropractic adjustments provide help and relief to thousands upon thousands of people daily. To get the most long-term benefit from their initial benefits received, patients would be well-advised to continue Chiropractic “maintenance adjustments” on a regular basis.

A study recently conducted and reported in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics shows that persons who received “maintenance” Chiropractic care after completing their initial care continued to experience a reduction in their disability.

Thirty volunteers who had been suffering from long-term non-specific back problems were divided into two study groups. The first group received intensive Chiropractic care consisting of 12 visits in one month. Following this, they were put on a reduced schedule of one visit every three weeks for the next nine months. The second group received the initial intensive treatment, but did not receive any follow-up care for the next nine months.

Members of both groups were evaluated and monitored for both pain and disability levels. Results showed that members of both groups experienced a similar reduction of pain and disability after their 30 days of Chiropractic care.

After a nine month period, both groups were evaluated again. Findings showed two things. One, both groups continued to experience a reduction of pain. Two, while both groups had reduced pain, only the group members who had nine months of Chiropractic “maintenance adjustments” experienced a continued reduction in their disability. Those who did not receive “maintenance adjustments” returned to similar levels of disability they were experiencing prior to their initial adjustments.

The study incorporated an accepted measurement tool for disability known as “The Oswestry Disability Index.” This questionnaire addresses 10 different aspects of a person’s physical function capacities. Only the persons who received their regular “maintenance adjustments” were able to maintain the functional improvements received during the initial care, according to the Index.

“Intensive spinal manipulation is effective for the treatment of chronic low back pain,” said the researchers. “This experiment suggests that maintenance spinal manipulations after intensive manipulative care may be beneficial to patients to maintain subjective post-intensive treatment disability levels.”

The Chiropractic profession recently received some very good news from an extensive 7-year study that focused on the neck region and on neck pain. The news had to do with study findings regarding Chiropractic adjustments and stroke. This comprehensive study determined that people who visit chiropractors for a neck adjustment are no more likely to suffer a stroke than when treated by members of any other medical profession.

This long-term study was mainly conducted to find the very best information and techniques available to help patients who suffer neck pain. The aim was also to provide healthcare professionals with the very best research evidence to help diagnose, treat, manage and prevent neck pain. The research was conducted by the Bone and Joint Decade 2000-2010 Task Force on Neck Pain and Its Associated Disorders with results published in the journal Spine. A multi-national and inter-disciplinary study team included Canadian, American, South American, Australasian and European researchers.

As part of its research initiative, the team launched a study into the association between Chiropractic care of the neck and stroke. This was a particularly important piece of research as chiropractors in several states have come under attack from groups who are running media and Internet campaigns suggesting that Chiropractic is dangerous and that adjustments can cause stokes.

The innovative piece of research that was recently concluded found that patients who visit a chiropractor are no more likely to experience a stroke than are patients who visit their family physician. The type of stroke in question generally begins with a headache or with neck pain. This causes the patient to seek care from a chiropractor or a family physician to obtain relief. Generally, this office visit occurs before a stroke fully develops.

“This type of stroke is extremely rare and has been known to occur spontaneously or after ordinary neck movements such as looking up at the sky or over the shoulder when backing a car,” said the lead author of the study Dr. David Cassidy, professor of epidemiology at the University of Toronto and senior scientist at the University of Health Network at Toronto Western Hospital.

This study provides excellent news and ammunition for chiropractors and Chiropractic organizations who have become the target of attacks from special interest groups who are suggesting that Chiropractic is dangerous and that Chiropractic adjustments cause strokes. According to this landmark study, this is just not true, and chiropractors and Chiropractic patients can use the information from this research to learn about and to demonstrate the safety of Chiropractic adjustments.

The reason: when chiropractors serve as the gate keeper of a managed care network there are substantial cost savings and decreased utilization of additional medical services as compared to PCPs using conventional medicine alone.

This latest research data comes on the heels of a study published in 2004 that showed similar results. The first study collected data from 1999 though 2002 with the expanded study done from 2003 to 2005. The lead investigators for both studies were Richard Sarnat, MD and James Winterstein, DC.

The basic idea behind the Chiropractic PCP model was to create an integrative system of health care using PCPs who specialized in non-pharmaceutical and non-surgical approaches compared to a traditional HMO system. An independent provider association known as Alternative Medicine Integration Group (AMI) served as the Chiropractic-lead provider.

The recent analysis supports the original findings in that patients who enroll in a Chiropractic-run network experienced a myriad of positive results in comparison to patients in an HMO monitored program. These included fewer hospital visits, less time spent in a hospital for care and being subjected to fewer surgeries. Additionally, they used far fewer pharmaceuticals than traditional HMO patients analyzed for the survey, resulting in lower utilization costs.

For the entire 7-year study period from 1999 to 2005, Chiropractic-lead AMI members had 60% fewer hospitalizations, 62% fewer outpatient surgical cases and 85% lower pharmaceutical costs than HMO members. Incidentally, chiropractors also had higher patient satisfaction scores, too.

Here’s what Dr. Sarnat had to say about the findings: “I have always believed that the over-utilization of pharmaceuticals and surgery, and the underutilization of more natural healing techniques, such as Chiropractic, has been the cause of great suffering. Yet, I had no idea that the magnitude of both clinical improvements and cost effectiveness would approach 50% in both cases.

“Previous studies have shown these types of savings when Chiropractic has been used as a first-line treatment for NMS (neuromusculoskeletal) ailments, instead of conventional medical care. But to see this level of effectiveness across the board for literally all types of clinical presentations within a primary care setting is surprising to me, and good news for the rest of the world.”

The percentage of Americans disabled by mental illness has increased fivefold since 1955, when Thorazine-remembered today as psychiatry’s first “wonder” drug-was introduced into the market. The number of Americans disabled by mental illness has nearly doubled since 1987, when Prozac-the first in a second generation of wonder drugs for mental illness-was introduced. There are now nearly 6 million Americans disabled by mental illness, and this number increases by more than 400 people each day. A review of the scientific literature reveals that it is our drug-based paradigm of care that is fueling this epidemic. The drugs increase the likelihood that a person will become chronically ill, and induce new and more severe psychiatric symptoms in a significant percentage of patients.

Now, the results of a recent study could shed an entirely different light on the source of the problem.

A study recently concluded in Chicago found that a one-time Chiropractic adjustment could produce a quite dramatic blood pressure reduction. The decrease in pressure was equal to a person taking two blood pressure reducing drugs at the same time.

Fifty persons were selected for the study. The requirements to participate were a high blood pressure condition and a misalignment of the Atlas vertebra. The Atlas is the top vertebra, the highest one in the body, located at the top of the neck.

George Bakris, MD, is the director of the hypertension (high blood pressure) center at the University of Chicago Medical Center and served as the lead author of the study. He pointed out that the Atlas, unlike the rest of the vertebrae in the body, relies only on soft tissue (muscles and ligaments) to hold it in place. For this reason, displacement can occur without pain, so misalignment often goes undetected and untreated.

Patients for the study were all treated by a Chicago area Doctor of Chiropractic. Prior to treatment he performed a variety of tests, including X-rays, to determine the exact adjustment needed for each patient. The subjects were then divided into two groups. Half received an actual adjustment while the other half received a very similar “sham adjustment.”

Each participant was fully assessed after their alignment and at the end of 8 weeks. The study authors said those receiving the actual adjustment had their blood pressure lowered by the amount of someone taking two different blood pressure-lowering drugs at the same time. The reduction continued through the 8 week period of the test. No significant heart rate change was noted in this group.

Why blood pressure changes occurred to this degree was beyond the scope of the study. “The mechanism as to why this improvement in blood pressure occurs is unknown and cannot be determined by this study,” they said. More study is needed to see exactly how a misaligned Atlas might cause hypertension. Also, more work is needed to see if an incorrectly aligned Atlas is an additional risk factor for the development of hypertension.”

Headaches affects the quality of life for many people throughout the world, and tension headaches are among the commonest forms. The search for an effective, drug-free treatment without side effects has made Acupuncture the most widely practiced non-medicinal treatment for headaches in the world.

Now, a scientific study supports the use of “laser Acupuncture” as a very effective treatment for tension headache. Fifty headache sufferers were split into two groups, one group treated with standard low-energy laser Acupuncture, the other with the laser intensity set to “zero” so that the laser could not create any Acupuncture-point stimulation. The zero-intensity group had no way of knowing they were receiving placebo Acupuncture. Ten sessions were given, three treatments per week.

The study analyzed the variables: headache intensity, duration of attacks, and number of days with a headache per month. These were found by having the participants keep a daily diary, which was then assessed monthly for three months after treatments.

Statistics Validate the Effectiveness of Laser Acupuncture

There were significant differences between groups in changes from baseline in months one, two and three. The median score for headache intensity in the treatment group showed decreases of -5, -3 and -2, whereas the placebo group showed a decrease of only –1 the first month, and then no improvement in the second and third months. Duration of attacks in the treatment group were reduced by a score of -6, -4 and -4 again in the third month. The placebo group showed only a -1 in the first month, and no subsequent improvement. The number of days with headaches per month in the treatment group went down by -15, -10 and -8, while the placebo group had a -2 in the first month and no subsequent improvement.

Laser Acupuncture uses high-energy, focused laser light instead of traditional Acupuncture needles to achieve stimulation of Acupuncture points in the body. The advantages are that the laser is completely painless, whereas the traditional needle can cause a small but painful jab; and a small number of patients are “needle phobic” who are just plain afraid of needles. For them, the laser is the perfect answer for their tension headaches, or for the many other conditions for which Acupuncture has proven so helpful.

A Case of “One Bad Apple Can Spoil the Barrel”

The belief that the United States is in the throes of a medical malpractice lawsuit crisis can be blamed on just a tiny group of negligent doctors, according to “The Great Medical Malpractice Hoax” just released by the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen.

Just 5.9 percent of doctors have been responsible for 57.8 percent of all medical malpractice payments, the study found. Each of these doctors had at least two payments, while conversely, the vast majority of physicians — 82 percent — have never had a medical malpractice payment, and a few physicians have even been involved in numerous malpractice litigations and, in most cases, still continue to practice, flourish and prosper.

The study, covering the 15-year period from 1990 through 2005, analyzed data from the National Practitioner Data Bank Public Use File that details all malpractice payments made on behalf of doctors as well as disciplinary actions against doctors.

“We’ve been telling the legislature and the public about this for years. Now we finally have the data to prove it,” said Allan Zelikovic, head of the Medical Malpractice Unit at Weitz & Luxenberg in a press release commenting on the report. The law firm is one of the largest and most successful in the country dealing with pharmaceuticals, accidents, injuries,
pollutants and malpractice.

Real crisis is inadequate patient safety

Part I of the analysis shows that the claims of business and medical lobbies are “exaggerated and unsupported by the facts.”

Part II examines data related to physician error and discipline, finding that “the real medical malpractice crisis continues to be inadequate patient safety, rather than the legal system.”

The report claims that there is a grievous lack of accountability on the part of a small group of doctors who commit a substantial number of avoidable errors that seriously injure patients.

The report contends that the business lobby seeks to protect its interests and distract people from medical negligence by calling for limits on malpractice litigation.

Healthcare providers, said the report, would be better served by striving to improve patient safety than giving credence to myths perpetuated about the court system.

A recent report in the Chiropractic community news shed light on the fact that the Veteran’s Administration (VA) is moving in the direction of increasing Chiropractic services to those who have served our country in the military.

Following on its heals, a new survey shows that the forward thinking of this, the largest single provider network of healthcare services in the United States, is definitely justified. By a good majority, Veterans surveyed reported that they would use Chiropractic services if they were available to them in their VA hospital.

The study queried 264 veterans on their interest in using Chiropractic treatment, plus sought their input on additional types of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM).

The survey found back pain to be the most frequently reported medical problem among veterans with 62.5% indicating discomfort in the area. However, only onefourth (26%) of the patients responding had made use of Chiropractic treatments to alleviate pain.

What the study revealed in the way of current pain handling was this disturbing fact: Prescription drugs are the pain handling solution of choice for medical problems in 76.9% of the cases.

However, veteran interest in finding alternative means of pain handling was very high. Respondents said, by a 67% margin, that they would use Chiropractic and other CAM options if these were provided by the VA.

Researchers concluded that the strong interest shown in Chiropractic and alternate forms of treatment should lead the VA to provide additional types of therapies to veterans.

They urged the VA to do further assessment of veteran needs and respond accordingly.

The assumed impact of flu shots in preventing death in the elderly population is in serious doubt following the release of results of an extensive statistical study.

A group of researchers under the leadership of Dr. Lone Simonsen of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases collected and analyzed massive amounts of data on flu related mortality dating from 1968 to 2001. The aim of the research was to see if observational studies claiming that flu vaccinations reduced winter mortality risk by up to 50% in the elderly population were indeed accurate.

Analyzing the data was quite a task and did involve some statistical corrective techniques to correlate the increased numbers of seniors, reported death rates in this population and increased numbers of seniors receiving inoculations.

Prior to 1980, only 15-20% of the population over 65 years of age received flu shots. By 2001, this figure had risen toward 65%. Subsequently, flu related deaths should have declined as a result. Factually, flu related deaths continued
to rise as well during this period.

The only declining mortality rate statistic noted during this period was following a particularly tough flu season of 1968 and extending to the early 1980s. Researchers concluded that the decline during this time had to do with higher immunities following exposures in 1968.

However, following the early 1980s through 2001, flu related mortality figures remained constant in the 65-74 age groups despite a major rise in the number of persons receiving vaccinations. Surprisingly, mortality rates remained flat in the over 85 population throughout the years of the study.

Basically, the researchers concluded that previous observational studies had greatly overstated the benefits of influenza vaccinations. Statistically, they could not correlate declining death rates in any portion of the elderly
population to increased vaccination protection. These findings should ease potential panic in the elderly population if flu shots were either unavailable or the person did not get one.

The benefits of Acupuncture in treating Shoulder Impingement Syndrome have been confirmed in a 2005 study conducted by researchers in Sweden. The results showed Acupuncture to provide enhanced healing over traditional ultrasound therapy when administered over a like period of time.

Shoulder Impingement Syndrome is due to irritation to or a tear in the rotator cuff, or an inflammation of the bursa in the area of shoulder bones. (A bursa is a fluid-filled sac that provides a cushion between a bone and tissues such as skin, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. An inflammation of the bursa is called bursitis.) This occurs mainly in individuals participating in sports or work activities requiring extensive and repeated overhead action, such as in the sports of tennis or swimming or the occupations as painting or construction. Pain occurs when the arm is lifted above shoulder height; the pain often travels down from the shoulder extending as far as the elbow joint.

85 adults, aged 30-65, who were identified as suffering from some degree of Shoulder Impingement Syndrome for at least 2 months were qualified for the study. Randomly, they were allocated to receive either Acupuncture or ultrasound.

The acupuncture group received 10 treatment sessions over a 5-week period. The ultrasound group received ultrasound therapy twice weekly over the same 5 weeks. Additionally, a home exercise program was regularly performed and logged by both groups. The aim of the exercise was stimulation of increased circulation and strength conditioning of rotator cuff muscles.

Testing of the patients at the end of the 5-week period demonstrated more rapid improvement in the Acupuncture group. And, while members of both groups continued to improve in tests conducted in the year to follow, the Acupuncture group continuously showed greater improvement.

Researchers concluded, “Acupuncture is advocated before ultrasound, in addition to home exercises, for patients with Impingement Syndrome.”

A new concluded study concluded at the Scandinavian College of Chiropractic in Stockholm, Sweden, gives increasing credibility to what more and more people are coming to know as fact – that patients suffering from chronic neck pain benefit from Chiropractic treatment.

Each person selected for the study had reported continuous neck pain for a period of at least three months. A total of 41 subjects were selected with symptoms considered to be chronic. Two groups were formed – one to receive Chiropractic treatment and the other receiving no Chiropractic care.

Assessments were done to categorize symptoms, measure Cervical (neck) Range of Motion (CROM) and Head Repositioning Accuracy (HRA). The HRA test measures the ability of the individual’s various nervous, skeletal and muscular systems to reposition the head in a neutral posture following active movement.

The treatment each subject received involved adjustments and rehabilitation exercises.

It should be noted that when the study began there were no significant differences between the treated patients and the control subjects in terms of age, sex, subjective pain intensity, range of motion, or head repositioning.

Both groups were tested and interviewed again following a 5-week period.

Results showed that the Chiropractic treatment patients exhibited significant reductions in pain and improvement in all HRA aspects that were measured. The control group did not show any reduction in pain and only one subject had improvement in one aspect of HRA. No real difference was detected in CROM.

The findings of the subject, simply stated, prove that Chiropractic helps people with long-standing neck pain.

As if the fact that tragic medical errors commonly occur isn’t bad enough, it’s what doctors have a tendency to do after the fact that may be even more alarming. A recent survey shows that medical doctors will be more likely to “sweep the problem under the rug” than bring the error to the “light of day.”

Medical errors happen at a high rate in the United States and Canada, probably a lot more than people realize. Hundreds of thousands of patient deaths inadvertently induced by a physician, surgeon, medical treatment or diagnostic procedure are recorded each year.

Consider these numbers:

More than 420,000 deaths are attributed to adverse drug reactions/medical error.

37,136 deaths are associated with unnecessary procedures.

Over 32,000 deaths are surgery-related.

With these statistics in mind, a survey was recently conducted in the U.S. and Canada to determine the level of medical doctor’s professional accountability when an error did occur. More than 2,500 doctors were included in the survey.

The participants were given 5 hypothetical error scenarios and a set of scripted possible explanations.

The results showed the following:

Only 42 percent of the participating medical doctors said they would explicitly tell patients when a medical error occurred.

Fifty-six percent said they would mention the adverse event to a patient, but not an error specifically.

Sixty-three percent said they would opt not to provide any information about preventing future errors.

And 19 percent said they would not volunteer any information whatsoever about the cause of the error.

These figures may lead some to feel disillusionment with the traditional medical doctor and pharmaceutical approach to treatment. Natural healthcare professionals emphasize drug-free wellness care in their healing procedures. A personalized and individual approach to healthy living is offered by natural healthcare professionals. Persons wishing to be involved in their own health and well-being would do well to consider and use natural healthcare.
